Inferring Unusual Crowd Events from Mobile Phone Call Detail Records

چکیده
The pervasiveness and availability of mobile phone data offer the opportunity of discovering usable knowledge about crowd behavior in urban environments. Cities can leverage such knowledge to provide better services (e.g., public transport planning, optimized resource allocation) and safer environment. Call Detail Record (CDR) data represents a practical data source to detect and monitor unusual events considering the high level of mobile phone penetration, compared with GPS equipped and open devices. In this paper, we propose a methodology that is able to detect unusual events from CDR data, which typically has low accuracy in terms of space and time resolution. Moreover, we introduce a concept of unusual event that involves a large amount of people who expose an unusual mobility behavior. Our careful consideration of the issues that come from coarse-grained CDR data ultimately leads to a completely general framework that can detect unusual crowd events from CDR data effectively and efficiently. Through extensive experiments on real-world CDR data for a large city in Africa, we demonstrate that our method can detect unusual events with 16% higher recall and over 10× higher precision, compared to state-of-the-art methods. We implement a visual analytics prototype system to help end users analyze detected unusual crowd events to best suit different application scenarios. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on the detection of unusual events from CDR data with considerations of its temporal and spatial sparseness and distinction between user unusual activities and daily routines.

Event Detection Based on Call Detail Records
In this paper we propose the model of the inhomogeneous Poisson for call frequency and inhomogeneous exponential distribution for call durations to detect events based on mobile phone call detail records. The maximum likelihood method is used to estimate the rate of frequency and call duration. This work is useful for enhancing homeland security, detecting unwanted calls (e.g., spam) and commer...
متن کاملInferring Asymmetry of Inhabitant Flow using Call Detail Records
In this research, we carry out a study of the inhabitant flow using a large mobile phone data with location estimates from subscribers in Suffolk county, Massachusetts, USA that reveals the asymmetry in the flows, which reflects the way that people travel daily. People occasionally travel in a non-symmetrical way. For instance, they would take one route traveling from home to a destination and ...
متن کاملTowards Measuring the Effectiveness of Telephony Blacklists
The convergence of telephony with the Internet has led to numerous new attacks that make use of phone calls to defraud victims. In response to the increasing number of unwanted or fraudulent phone calls, a number of call blocking applications have appeared on smartphone app stores, including a recent update to the default Android phone app that alerts users of suspected spam calls. However, lit...
متن کاملAssessing reliable human mobility patterns from higher-order memory in mobile communications
Understanding how people move within a geographical area, e.g. a city, a country or the whole world, is fundamental in several applications, from predicting the spatio-temporal evolution of an epidemic to inferring migration patterns. Mobile phone records provide an excellent proxy of human mobility, showing that movements exhibit a high level of memory. However, the precise role of memory in w...
متن کاملA Test-Bed for Emergency Management Simulations
We present a test-bed for Emergency Management Simulations by contrasting two prototypes we have built, CAVIAR and Reverse 111. We outline the desirable design principles that guide our choices for simulating emergencies and implement these ideas in a modular system, which utilizes proactive crowd-sourcing to enable emergency response centers to contact civilians co-located with an emergency, t...
